Is Toastmasters proven to produce great speakers?

Written by

Disinguished Toastmaster PinI can’t imagine there to be any other answer than “of course!”

One needs only to look at the yearly journey towards the coveted title of World Champion of Public Speaking. The title says it all “World Champion.” Everyone who competes at any level of the competition, from the club through to the world championship level has been a member of good standing of Toastmasters i.e. they are a product of the Toastmasters program.

Perhaps the term ‘great’ is disputable. Does great mean talented? How about highly skilled at speaking? Are they perfect at communicating their message and tweaking the heart strings of the audience?

There is a belief that we all create our own reality. My reality is completely different than anyone else’s. I believe the same principal applies to how we interpret the word ‘great’. A great speaker, from my perspective, is merely one that resonates with the listening audience.

Having said that, I believe that to become a great speaker, an undisputably great speaker, you would need to get additional training and expertise from someone such as a speech or presentations coach. Out Toastmasters venue is a perfect venue for practicing and honing one’s speaking skills, however a coach/trainer is needed to take someone to the next level of greatness.
